CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Velez College Gym came alive with the electrifying sounds of hard plastic paddles hitting wooden tables as the much-anticipated table tennis matches took center stage. With eight years of unbroken championship glory, the pressure was on the MedTech Vikings to defend their title, this time led by formidable captain Alexa Mari Genesis Raboy.

As the crowd erupted with excitement, Vital Signs had the privilege of interviewing one of the star players of the Medtech Vikings, Harrieza Dane Cabigas, who shared her thoughts and experiences on the intense competition that unfolded on the tables.

Harrieza Dane Cabigas, an integral part of the Vikings women’s team, described the intense journey they had embarked on to reach the final. She reminisced about the legacy of the men’s team and how it had inspired them to push even harder, striving to maintain the Vikings’ honor. “Our men's team set a remarkable standard for us, and we are determined to follow in their footsteps,” Cabigas stated, with a determination that reflected in her team’s performance.

The path to victory was not an easy one. Rigorous tryouts for the women’s team created an environment that allowed players to foster friendships with fellow MedTech students. Under the guiding hand of Captain Raboy, the bond between teammates grew stronger during training sessions. Cabigas also revealed that they focused on refining their skills and experimenting with various pair combinations, ensuring they were ready for the doubles games. Yet, the challenges of coordinating training schedules, particularly among second and third years, proved a formidable hurdle.

“It wasn't always easy,” Cabigas admitted with a smile. “But our love for the sport and unshakable belief in each other’s abilities kept us going.”

Amid the intramurals, every department showcased fierce athletes, making strategic planning essential. Cabigas emphasized the importance of deception and confidence in-game, noting that these had a significant impact on their strategy. However, she highlighted their maintained composure, allowing them to stay focused despite the inevitable nerves that came with the high-stakes matches.

The hard work and dedication paid off for the Vikings as they continued their championship streak with a flawless victory. Their relentless three-day training sessions, which extended from morning until evening just before the opening ceremony, were fruitful. Cabigas credited their success to their shared passion for the sport and commitment to representing the Vikings.

The gym bore witness to an extraordinary display of talent, teamwork, and dedication during the table tennis competition. As the Vikings continue their dynasty, it's clear that their unbreakable bond and love for the sport have propelled them to new heights.
