“Walking into the gym made us nervous. Our opponents were really tall and seemed prepared. Plus, they were making all their shots during warm-up,” Ycot said. She further expressed her delight in her team playing well while having a blast. Aside from that, she said that gaining new friends from other departments “was even better than just winning.”

As tension built up during the game, the crowd fiercely echoed their support for their bets. However, excitement was replaced with worry as two successive minor injuries, one from each team, were addressed. The athletes were promptly treated by VC-ERT and were back on the court in no time.

CEBU CITY, Philippines — the PTOT Spartans dominated the Nursing Blue Knights, 61-32, in the first-ever championship women’s basketball game held in Cogon Gym last October 20, 2023.

The whole-day event started with a match between the Knights and MedTech Vikings, giving the Knights its first win, and was followed by a game between the Vikings and Spartans, allowing the Spartans to advance to the championship. The CAS Titans forfeited early on due to a lack of players.

The Spartans relied on their proclaimed MVP Danice Kean Ycot, as well as captains Hannah Sophia Mier and Redjinna Marie Violango, in their triumph against the Knights, to win. The PTOT team admitted to not taking their leads for granted, especially as the Knights continued to focus in-game and score points in an attempt to close the gap.

When asked how it felt to represent the department in the event and be awarded MVP, Ycot conveyed that it was not only her hard work and dedication that made the win possible, but also the efforts of her teammates, coaches, and everyone supporting them.

“Winning the championship and receiving the MVP award is a validation of the effort we put in, and I’m really just happy that we could make our college proud.”

Amidst the intense competition, the PTOT Spartans exemplified the true essence of sportsmanship and teamwork. Indeed, red, white, and gold ang ni-daog!
