The athlete expressed that one of his key guiding principles was to be a role model throughout their team’s journey. “I was hoping they would also do the same and play their hearts out,” he added. It was not only because of his position but also because he believed in inspiring his teammates to give their all. He emphasized the importance of playing with heart and soul, a value their team holds dear. His leadership and dedication on and off the court created a sense of unity and purpose within the team, fostering a collective determination to succeed.
In Lawton’s basketball journey, he learned that failure is inevitable. However, he firmly believes that as long as grit and determination are present, one may overcome the challenges that may arise.
CEBU CITY, Philippines — the PTOT Spartans surpassed the MedTech Vikings, 41-37, in the championship men’s basketball game held in the Velez Gym last October 20, 2023.
Hailing from the Spartans, 21-year-old Byron Edward Lawton delivered an impeccable performance on that eventful night. His three-point shots, steals, and passes were a sight to see. He also scored the last two points of the game, securing the win for PTOT. It is no surprise that Lawton earned the title of MVP!
For Lawton, winning MVP for men's basketball represented a significant milestone, reflecting years of dedication and hard work. He revealed, “It served as a reward for all my sacrifices and efforts since day one.” From countless hours on the court to enduring rigorous training regimes, their team was committed; their unrelenting dedication brought them to the pinnacle of success.

When asked how he started in basketball and what drove him to hone the craft, Lawton shared that his journey began in elementary school, and fell in love with it ever since. “Three things motivate me to excel in this sport,” he said. “First, I always got inspiration from my friends, family, and coaches. Second, my genuine passion for the game. Lastly, I wanted success for our team. And since I was the captain, I was willing to do everything to make sure that we win and bring home the trophy.”
A key highlight during the intramurals was the support and cheers the athletes got from their department; the Spartans were indeed one of the most energetic crowds out there. Lawton quoted, “If it weren’t for the PTOT cheers, we wouldn’t be champions.”
Lawton then imparted these words of advice to all aspiring basketball players and athletes: “If you love the sport, always play with your heart and be ready to sacrifice a few things to become a better athlete. Stay grounded, and you'll grow.”
